"Floating Implant" After Nose Augmentation: How to Check Before It's Too Late
Floating Implant is a condition where the nasal augmentation silicone implant is not firmly anchored to the underlying structure or is not placed beneath the periosteum layer, allowing the silicone to shift or move when touched. This problem can lead to more severe complications such as a distorted or crooked nose, or even implant extrusion (breakthrough). You can easily check for a floating implant yourself with the following sign:
How to Check for a "Floating Implant" Yourself
Wait until the swelling after nose augmentation has subsided (usually clearly observable 3–6 months post-surgery). Then, try the following steps :
The Movement Test
- Gently touch the middle of the nasal bridge or slightly towards the tip with your index finger.
- Try to shift/wiggle your finger left-right or press gently.
- Warning Sign If you feel the silicone implant rod can easily move along with the wiggling finger, or shifts distinctly in a different direction from the native nasal tissue, it indicates a "floating implant."
- Visible Implant Edges : Clearly notice the edge, corner, or outline of the silicone in the inner corner of the eye or on the nasal bridge, looking like a distinct rod that is not snugly attached to the original nasal structure.
- Nasal Distortion/Deviation : The shape of the nose is visibly twisted or crooked when looking straight ahead.
- Tenderness upon Touching : Feeling a sharp twinge or unusual sensitivity when touching or stroking the nasal bridge.

Other Warning Signs That Require "Immediate Medical Attention" Before Implant Extrusion
If a floating implant is accompanied by these symptoms, it is a dangerous sign that requires immediate surgical correction
- Thin/Shiny/Translucent Tip : The skin at the nasal tip is thinning down, showing the shadow of the silicone, or is abnormally white, shiny, and glossy.
- Red/Dark Tip : The tissue at the nasal tip changes to a dark red, purplish color, or is abnormally pale.
- Pain/Soreness/Inflammation : Feeling unusual tightness, pain, or warmth on the nasal bridge or tip (which may indicate inflammation or infection).
- Drooping Nose/Indentation : A groove, indentation, or the nasal tip is drooping and turning downward more than before.

If you find any of the above symptoms, regardless of whether movement is obvious or not, you should immediately consult a plastic surgeon for diagnosis and correction planning. Allowing the silicone to float for too long can increase the risk of future extrusion and infection issues.
