Why do you need to 'fast' before a health checkup?

      Before undergoing a health checkup, it is essential to prepare in advance to ensure accurate results. Skipping preparations can lead to inaccurate health assessment results. This is because the nutrients and substances from various foods and beverages we consume enter our bloodstream and may affect blood test results. Therefore, it is crucial to fast before a health checkup. The fasting duration may vary depending on the specific blood tests being conducted. Today, we have some information to share with everyone.

  • For fasting blood sugar (FBS) testing, you should abstain from food, beverages, chewing gum, and all types of candies for at least 8 hours before the blood draw. However, drinking plain water is allowed.
  • For lipid profile testing, including fasting triglycerides and LDL cholesterol, you should fast for at least 10-12 hours before the test. You can drink plain water during this fasting period. Alcohol should be avoided for 3 days before the blood draw.


  • For serum iron testing, fasting is generally not necessary, but the doctor may provide specific instructions based on individual circumstances.
  • For testing vitamin B12 levels, you should fast for 12 hours before the blood draw
  • For kidney function tests (BUN, Creatinine), fasting is not required, but it is recommended to reduce red meat consumption for 2-3 days before the test
