B.E.F.A.S.T. - 6 warning signs of stroke!
Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide, and its incidence continues to rise. It is a medical emergency that requires urgent treatment. Knowing and quickly recognizing the warning signs can significantly increase the chances of a full recovery. You can easily remember the symptoms of a stroke with the "B.E.F.A.S.T." acronym.
  • B – Balance : The patient suddenly feels dizzy, stumbles, has difficulty with balance, or experiences a severe headache unlike any they've had before.
  • E – Eyes : There are sudden vision problems, such as blurry vision, double vision, or a loss of sight in one eye.
  • F – Face : Observe if one side of the face is numb or weak, or if the mouth is crooked. When the person smiles, one side of the mouth will droop.
  • A – Arm : There is weakness in one arm. Ask the patient to raise both arms at the same time. If one arm drifts downward uncontrollably, it's a warning sign.
  • S – Speech : Speech is slurred, difficult to understand, confused, or the person can't find the right words or doesn't understand what others are saying.
  • T – Time : When you see these symptoms, call 1669 (Thailand's emergency medical service). Even if the symptoms disappear, you must get the patient to the hospital as quickly as possible within the 4.5-hour golden window of treatment.
Remembering the "B.E.A.S.T." acronym will help you assess the situation and get help in time, because every minute that passes reduces the chance of recovery. Stroke treatment must be performed quickly. Patients who receive treatment within the first 4.5 hours (270 minutes) have a better chance of recovery than those who are treated late, especially when clot-busting medication is administered. This medication helps open blocked blood vessels in time and reduces damage to brain tissue. Timely treatment not only prevents complications but also reduces the risk of disability. Do not hesitate to seek medical attention if you suspect a loved one may be having a stroke.
