10 Warning Signs of a Malfunctioning Thyroid
Thyroid diseases are often seen as something distant, but in reality, they are common in both men and women in Thailand. The thyroid gland is a small butterfly-shaped organ located in your neck, yet it plays a crucial role in the body's function. It produces hormones that control almost all of your body's metabolism, from heart rate and body temperature to brain function and mood. When the thyroid gland starts to malfunction, it can have unexpected effects on your body.

Types of Thyroid Disorders
Thyroid conditions can be divided into two main categories :
  • Hyperthyroidism (Overactive Thyroid) : This occurs when the thyroid produces too many hormones. Symptoms can include a rapid heart rate, weight loss, fatigue, hand tremors, excessive sweating, and irritability. If left untreated, it can lead to conditions like hyperthyroidism, goiters (enlarged thyroid gland), and in some cases, thyroid cancer.
  • Hypothyroidism (Underactive Thyroid) : This happens when the thyroid doesn't produce enough hormones. Symptoms often include weight gain, fatigue, dry skin, hair loss, sensitivity to cold, and constipation. These symptoms tend to develop gradually and are often overlooked in the early stages.

  • Unusual Fatigue : Both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can make you feel abnormally tired and sluggish.
  • Hair Loss : Both conditions can cause hair to become brittle and fall out easily.
  • Insomnia : If you're a heavy sleeper but suddenly have trouble sleeping, it could be due to an overactive thyroid, which stimulates your central nervous system.
  • Constant Sleepiness : An underactive thyroid can reduce your energy levels, making you feel sleepy and lethargic throughout the day.
  • Unexplained Weight Changes : People with hyperthyroidism often lose weight rapidly, while those with hypothyroidism tend to gain weight easily.

  • Irregular Bowel Movements : Hypothyroidism often causes constipation, while hyperthyroidism can lead to frequent bowel movements or diarrhea.
  • Feeling Colder or Hotter than Normal : Hypothyroidism makes you feel cold easily, while hyperthyroidism causes you to feel hot and sweat excessively.
  • Dry Skin : An underactive thyroid can lead to dry skin and reduced sweating.
  • Heart Palpitations : Too much thyroid hormone can speed up your body's functions, leading to a fast heart rate and frequent palpitations.

Thyroid disorders are common health issues that can significantly affect your life. Pay attention to warning signs like changes in weight, sleep problems, or changes in your skin and hair. Women, the elderly, and those with a family history of thyroid disease are at higher risk. If you or someone you know has more than two or three of these symptoms without an obvious cause, it's a good idea to get a thyroidscreening for peace of mind and to prevent potential complications.
