Postpartum breast changes : What to do when your areolas get larger?
Pregnancy and breastfeeding are periods of great change for a woman's body, and one of the most affected organs is the breast, due to the enlargement of mammary glands and ducts in preparation for lactation. The size and shape of the areola is an important part that affects the aesthetics and symmetry of the chest. Having an areola that is too large or disproportionate to the breast size can make many women feel self-conscious. Areola reduction surgery is one option that helps correct the areola size, giving it a beautiful shape that better suits the breast's anatomy.
What is Areola Reduction?
Areola Reduction is a medical procedure to decrease the diameter of the areola area to the desired size. The surgeon meticulously removes the excess skin around the areola's border and sutures the incision along the border between the areola and the normal skin, making the scar faint and difficult to see.
- Main Objective : To adjust the proportion between the areola and the breast size for a more symmetrical, beautiful, and appealing appearance.
- Surgical Time : It usually takes about 1–2 hours and can be performed simultaneously with other breast surgeries, such as breast augmentation or breast lift.
Who is Suitable for Areola Reduction Surgery?
Areola reduction is suitable for individuals who wish to improve the overall look of their breasts and have the following qualifications or issues :
- Those with disproportionately large areolas : Individuals whose areola diameter is too large compared to the overall breast size, making the chest look disproportionate.
- Those whose areolas expanded after pregnancy/breastfeeding : Hormonal changes and lactation often cause the areola size to enlarge permanently.
- Those undergoing a breast lift : In some cases of breast lift surgery, the areola size may be reduced concurrently to achieve the appropriate position and proportion after the lift.
- Those feeling self-conscious about their appearance : Individuals who feel uncomfortable or lack confidence about the size or shape of their areolas.
- Those with good health : Must be physically healthy, free from diseases that affect surgery or wound healing, and emotionally mature enough for surgery.
Typically, surgeons try to preserve vital nerve tissues and milk ducts as much as possible. However:
- Breastfeeding : Although most women can still breastfeed after the surgery, there is a slight chance that the surgery might affect the milk ducts and milk supply.
- Nipple Sensation : There might be temporary or permanent changes in sensation in the nipple or areola area.
